Sixteen year old Denise Jackson was the first singer to make it through to Hollywood on the American Idol 6 premiere. Denise was from Madison, Wisconsin, and she revealed an inspiring background story. Denise said that she had been born a crack baby and was going to be sent to a foster home, but her grandmother came and rescued her.

Denise said, “Knowing that I was born that way, I thank God, you know because many people have disabilities from these things, and there’s nothing wrong with me, I was actually born with a gift, you know a wonderful gift, I can sing.”

Denise Jackson sang Billie Holiday’s “You’re Gonna Love Me.” After her audition, Paula Abdul said “Pretty powerful, pretty powerful, pretty adorable.” Simon Cowell said “Well, you did everything right. You’ve got two minutes to audition, you came in, belted it out, proved at sixteen you can do that, good on you. I think you’re a very good singer potentially.” All four judges agreed on putting Denise through to Hollywood.

Perla Meneses - American Idol 6

Ryan Seacrest said that Perla Meneses was prepared to flirt her way to Hollywood, and she told Ryan that she was wondering if he had a girlfriend. Perla asked Ryan if he liked Spanish girls, and he said “yes.” However, Ryan took offense to Perla saying they were both kind of short, and he responded that she was short and he was average.

Perla Meneses is originally from Columbia, but she currently lives in Margate, Florida. Perla revealed that she came to this country when she was fifteen with two backpacks, her teddy bear, and her guitar. Perla also said that at one point during her life she was homeless and living out of her car. Perla insisted “It’s not a sob story, it’s a survival story.”

Twenty-five year old Perla Meneses sang Blondie’s “Call Me.” After her first song, Randy Jackson requested that she sing Shakira’s “Hips Don’t Lie.” Randy Jackson said “There’s something about you I like. You’ve got this kind of spunky, kind of crazy, wild attitude. I feel like you can jump out of your skin at any minute. I like daredevils. I kind of like you.” Jewel said “I think you’re cute and perky. You have a cute personality. I think your singing is a little bit in the middle as far as talent goes right now. I do think the second song was a little bit better.” Paula Abdul said “I much preferred you doing Hips Don’t Lie.” Simon Cowell said “You are great doing that Shakira thing, the problem is that when you did the Blondie song it’s so heavily accented it does sound a bit odd, so your choice of songs are going to be difficult for you. Ok, but you know that, you’re great fun.” All four judges agreed on putting Perla through to Hollywood.

Simon Cowell said “I thought that was a very good audition. I thought it was an odd choice of song, but I think the public are really going to like you, because you’re confident without being irritatingly precocious.” All four judges put Michelle through to Hollywood.

Rachel Jenkins - American Idol 6

Twenty-one year old Rachel Jenkins is from Minnetonka, Minnesota, and she works for her parents’ body shop. Rachel’s husband Daniel is with the 4th Infantry division in Iraq. Rachel and Daniel were married for two months before he left to serve overseas. Rachel is also a member of the United States Army Reserves.

Rachel Jenkins sang “His Eye Is On The Sparrow.” Randy Jackson said “Ahh, you stopped. Simon, what do you think man?” Simon Cowell said “Rachel, you started off well on the song, and then it kind of fell apart towards the end, but when it started I liked you. You’re not one of the best singers, but I think people would like you.”

Jewel said “I’m with Simon. It started out it was a pretty quality tier voice, and then it sounded like you started floating between keys.” Randy Jackson said “I like the tone of your voice, kind of a husky, smokey tone. I was actually surprised when you opened your mouth and started singing, I was like wow, she might have something here.” All four judges decided to put Rachel through to Hollywood. Rachel told Simon that she loved his personality, and she kissed a picture of her husband.

Nineteen year old Shyamali Malakar from Lacey, Washington attended the auditions with her brother Sanjaya. Sanjaya’s father was a classical Indian musician, so she was raised around music.

Shyamali Malakar sang Summertime. Paula Abdul said “You’re better than you give yourself credit. You’re very nervous, and you don’t have reason to be. You’re very good, very subtle, but great. You have energy about you, I think your voice is really pretty.”

Simon Cowell said “Nothing unique, nothing different, very pretty, but nothing unusual.” Randy Jackson said “I like you. I think you’ve got a nice voice. I think you’ve still got to find out who you are and where it should fit, but I think you’ve got a good voice though, I like it.” Both Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul said “yes,” which was enough to put Shyamali through to Hollywood.

Before Anna auditioned, Simon Cowell said “I think she’s the tallest girl I’ve ever seen in my life.” Anna Kearns sang Aretha Franklin’s “Respect.” Randy Jackson said “Actually, I thought your voice was pretty good, little loud, very loud, probably could tone it down, but it’s a little tall where she’s singing from so..”

Simon Cowell said “Anna, you’re interesting, I thought you were very old fashion, very cabaret, very over the top, but you have..” Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson then started to growl at Simon. Simon refused to continue, but Randy and Paula put Anna through to Hollywood. After Anna left, Simon quipped, “You just put through a giraffe.”

I loved you, love your voice.” Randy Jackson said “I was blown away, sixteen, wow.” Simon Cowell said “Sometimes, I like to put one sugar in my coffee to make it sweeter, that was the equivalent of putting eleven spoonfuls in. It was all a bit too cutesy, a bit over the top, you know that weird smile thing you were doing throughout.”

After Paula and Randy protested, Simon added “All I’m saying is it was a little bit too sugary for my taste. I like you, I was just trying to give you some constructive advice. It was a compliment.” All three judges agreed to put Jordin through to Hollywood.

Rosie O'Donnell has opened her mouth again and is now bashing 'American Idol'. Rosie O'Donnell, who seems to have a problem with everyone but herself, hit out at 'American Idol's much loved judges, Simon, Paula and Randy, on 'The View' Thursday morning.

Rosie is known for sticking her nose in everyone else's business but her own, and this includes America's favorite show - 'American Idol'.

Rosie grumbled, "If you keep serving people crap, they're eventually going to think it's a meal."

"Three millionaires...one probably intoxicated. So sad."

Rosie's latest complaint comes after 32M Americans watched the debut episodes of the new season of 'Idol'. Rosie's anger came about when she saw Simon make fun of contestant Kenneth Briggs, who did not win a gold ticket, by telling him he looked like a monkey.

Simon told cynical Briggs, "You look like one of those creatures in the jungle with those massive eyes, what are they called? Bush baby."

Rosie fumed, "To make fun of someone's physical appearance, is this what America thinks is entertainment?"

Madison teen, self-described "crack baby," part of American Idol

MADISON, Wis. - Denise Jackson describes herself as a "crack baby," but the 16-year-old junior is now one of 17 contestants chosen in the Midwest to go to the semifinals for a chance to be the next "American Idol."

"There's a lot of controversy about what I said on 'American Idol.' Some people asked me, Why would you say that?'" Jackson said of her description of her upbringing. "It's the truth. I'm not ashamed of what I am. I'm a young lady."

Jackson, who goes to La Follette High School, has spent a chunk of her time with TV camera crews and answering phone calls about her success after being plucked out of more than 18,000 who auditioned. The show aired Tuesday in front of 30 million viewers, and she'll return to Los Angeles on Feb. 14 for the semifinals.

Jackson credits her brother, 28-year-old Rafael Jackson, as being instrumental in her decision to audition.

Eighties pop star-turned-American Idol judge Paula Abdul is set to become a reality TV queen in her own right after landing a deal to put her life on television.

The former dancer has agreed to a deal with bosses at Bravo to turn her "hectic" life into a new reality series.

The unnamed show will focus on Abdul's work on American Idol as well as her private life and her new role as executive producer of the new film 'Bratz: The Movie' - based on the popular dolls for kids.

The singer says, "I'm excited to open the doors to Bravo and have all my fans see the other sides to me, beyond what they see on American Idol."

America's number one reality TV show is set to surge on to television screens this week. Fans are pumped as a whole new set of American idol wannabes line up for our entertainment. And as if the program needed any more of a boost two jucy tidbits have emerged just before the first show airs on Tuesday.

Nothing like some sex and booze stories emerging to get the buzz stated.

First, judge Paula Abdul was on camera in Seattle slurring her words and many have accused the judge of being drunk or otherwise inebriated. The video of Paula Abdul promoting the new season of American Idol simply cannot be disregarded.

Stone Martindale writes, the various videos shows Paula acting "not normally," and looking inebriated on something. Paula’s flack is now blaming “technical issues” and “exhaustion” for her wacky on air behavior

He said, “She was exhausted. This was at the end of three days of press (interviews and appearances), and she has had cameras following her around for a reality TV show too. She was sitting in a room with just a camera and a mic on, and the controllers dropped the sound twice, which is why she rolled her eyes. She never drinks. I have known Paula Abdul since she was 13, and I have never seen her drink.”

''American Idol'': Questions from the auditions

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - There are separate lines for coffee, hot dogs, parking, pretzels and the bathroom at the New York-area auditions for the sixth season of Fox's ''American Idol.''

Oh. And there's a line to audition, too.

Thousands of wannabe Kelly Clarksons and Carrie Underwoods lined up at the Continental Airlines Arena at the Meadowlands Sports Complex last August for their chance to shine in front of producers.

While an arena spokeswoman counted 9,263 people inside -- that includes auditioners and their one allotted guest each -- a Fox spokeswoman said 13,000 people were present.

Despite the talent competition's new wristband-and-ticket audition process -- a numerical system that eliminated the need for crooners to camp outside of audition locales across the country -- thousands of participants began lining up in New Jersey on the day of auditions way before 5 a.m.

Here's questions many wondered before they arrived, with answers most had to figure out for themselves.

WHERE DO I GO TO THE BATHROOM?

Before auditioners were allowed inside the Continental Airlines Arena, the only place to do their business was in one of the portable toilets in the parking lot. Along with the 10 commodes usually stationed in the parking lot, 22 more Mr. Johns were brought in for relief, according to Ron VanDeVeen, associate general manager of the arena. Once inside, indoor plumbing was readily available to all.

HOW DO I PREPARE FOR THE AUDITION?

Wannabe Idols were required to register the day before the first-round audition. Then, they and their one allotted guest received a ticket, wristband and instructions to bring two songs, two forms of identification and completed release forms. Auditioners were also told not to wear anything with a logo and be prepared to sing ''Can't Smile Without You'' by Barry Manilow in a group.

WHERE DO I PARK?

The New Jersey Turnpike off-ramp looked like a parking lot at 5 a.m. as caravans of singers made their way to the auditions. But actual parking was available at the site for $10 per vehicle. Because of the mass number of commuters, shuttle buses brought participants to the arena from the sprawling parking lot.

WHERE DO I THROW THIS AWAY?

Oh, anywhere. That's what most people seemed to do as refuse piled up on the pavement outside of the arena. Despite large blue trash bins with wheels that lined the roped-off section of the sidewalk -- guess aspiring Idols don't need to recycle -- the parking lot looked more like a war zone than a Hollywood set after participants moved inside the arena.

WHAT CAN I BRING?

According to instructions passed out the day before auditions, ''Idol'' producers allowed the following: banners, blankets, bottled water, cell phones, folding chairs, cameras, flashlights, hats, coolers, pillows, sleeping bags, backpacks, umbrellas, sunglasses and sunscreen. Stuff such as hair dryers, fireworks, candles, animals and camcorders were prohibited and possessing them could lead to ''immediate disqualification.''

GOT ANYTHING TO EAT?

Unless they packed lunches, the same stuff they'd scarf down during a professional basketball game. Outside of the arena in the morning, auditioners could purchase Dunkin Donuts coffee and assorted pastries from portable carts. Typically pricey concessions -- bottled water for $4, hot dogs for $3.75 -- were sold throughout the day of the first-round audition.

WILD TIMES OFF SET OF AMERICAN IDOL

January 14, 2007 -- As Season Six of "American Idol" debuts Tuesday, it turns out that the drama onstage is nothing compared to the soap-opera antics offstage - in the luxury bunkhouses where finalists share bedrooms, bathrooms, meals and a general disdain for the onerous rules and curfews.

Based on interviews with 10 past contestants from different seasons, The Post can reveal what life is like in the "American Idol" dorm.

Katharine McPhee repeatedly sneaked out to visit her boyfriend. Ryan Starr spied on neighbor Jennifer Lopez's house. Scott Savol and pals made frequent trips to Hooters. And Bucky Covington says the boys' rooms were stinking pigsties.

On the other hand, Josh Gracin often cooked breakfast.

Each season, contestants who make it past the national auditions are flown to Los Angeles, where they live two to a room in a hotel. Once Simon, Paula and Randy winnow the group to 12 finalists, they're moved into private accommodations.

During the first three seasons, home was a four-story mansion on Mulholland Drive in Bel-Air. Since then, contestants have lived in a luxury apartment complex just three miles from the studio.

Rumors of Paula Abdul Spread

Everyone should be getting into gear for the all new season of American Idol which will feature brand new voices from across the U.S. on Tuesday and Wednesday. Isn't it funny after 5 years the show is still leading the ratings and there's no doubt that this time around it may be even bigger. According to reports American Idol is so good that the night the Grammy Awards aired they got pushed off to the side big time.

For those who haven't been keeping up, this season auditions were held in Memphis, Tenn., San Antonio, Los Angeles, Birmingham, Ala., Minneapolis, Seattle and New York where tons of hopefuls displayed not only singing talent but ambition in front of celebrity judges Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson.

For season 6 you should also be expecting some special guest judges like every season of American Idol always does. This time around, guest judges will include Olivia Newton John, Jewel, Carole Bayer Sager and maybe a few others.

Now with Paula Abdul, alot of people have been saying alot about her after she appeared on TV on Thursday. Right now, people have been questioning as to whether she was drunk or drugged up or something. As many may not know the choregrapher/pop star has had some battles and health issues which will always arise every now and then such as her stated spinal injury and other health problems.

Due to someone posting a video online and it getting a bunch of criticism, the pop singer/choregrapher cancelled a media interview on Friday. The video showed her slurring. Paula's reps did state that she couldn't hear during her interview and the the TV station did ackowledge that there was some technical difficulties during the interview which may have contributed to her alleged slurring.

'American Idol' Kelly Clarkson And Reba Team Up For Sitcom

Grammy award winner and 'American Idol' Kelly Clarkson will make a guest appearance on country music star Reba McEntire's hit US TV show.

The 24-year-old Walk Away singer will guest star as a ditzy local TV station intern in the sitcom Reba on 14 January (07).

This isn't the first time the pair have worked together - they sang a duet on US reality talent competition American Idol when Clarkson was a contestant in 2002.

Clarkson, who also performed at a televised tribute to McEntire late last year (06), adds, "I love her... She's just a really great person."

Bennett, niece of inspirational singer Anne Nesby originally from the Sounds of Blackness, signed with 306 Entertainment for her debut set. "Dreamin'," the autobiographical first single, is slated to impact iTunes and radio in January of 2007. The 18-year-old co-wrote the majority of the songs on the album which also boasts production from Jon Jon TraXX, Darren Lightey and Rodney Jerkins.

Forget about those rumors placing Jessica Simpson with Dallas Cowboys rising star QB Tony Romo. A new published report claims that the Cowboys signal caller is dating former American idol winner and rising country music star Carrie Underwood.

The pair were all the buzz during Monday's NBC broadcast of the nationally televised game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Cowboys prompting veteran analyst John Madden to question exactly what was going on when the NBC cameras caught the pair hugging on the field before the game.

"American Idol" Tops Nielsen List Of Popular Shows

Nielsen has just released the most popular media trends in 2006. The list includes movie hits, television programs and music entertainment. Music related competitions proved to be the winners of the year.

In first and second place was the reality show extravaganza "American Idol," which aired on both Tuesday and Wednesday nights and saw Taylor Hicks taking the crown.

Another reality competition also secured its spot in the top five. "Dancing With The Stars," which included celebrities Joey Lawrence and Mario Lopez came in at No. 3.

American Idol Hicks to marshal Carnival

American Idol winner Taylor Hicks will reign as the Krewe of Endymion's grand marshal for the 2007 Carnival season. The gray-haired, 30-year-old soul singer from Birmingham, Ala., won over audiences this year with his vocal performances and curious dancing style on the hit reality TV show.

Singer Al Green and the musical groups Journey and Styx will also ride in the parade.

Hicks was in New Orleans for a wedding just before Hurricane Katrina struck on Aug. 29, 2005. With his flight out of town canceled, he took a cab to West Monroe and turned his free plane ticket into an Idol audition trip to Las Vegas.

Before ousting fellow Idol finalist Katherine McPhee in May, Hicks was a struggling musician unknown outside the small Southern clubs where he performed. His first single "Do I Make You Proud" sold more than 190,000 copies in the first week of release, according to Billboard magazine.

The 24 "American Idol" finalists won't be announced until tonight, but entertainment magazines are already calling 17-year-old Paris Bennett the favorite in the reality show competition.

"She would have to set a kitten on fire onstage not to make it to the final 12," said Entertainment Weekly's Michael Slezak, who writes a blog about the show for EW.com.

That's a sentiment echoed by the many Twin Citians who have worked with the former Edina High School student or seen her perform on local stages.

On the show, Bennett is identified as a Fayetteville, Ga., resident, because she has lived there with her grandmother since last year. But her gigantic voice is familiar to locals who have seen her in recent productions at Penumbra Theatre Company in St. Paul and Children's Theatre Company in Minneapolis.

Bennett, who as a sophomore starred in Edina High School's production of "The Wiz," comes from a musically gifted family. Her mother, Jamecia Bennett, and her grandmother, Ann Nesby, are past members of the Twin Cities-based Grammy-winning gospel group Sounds of Blackness.

"They are really something," said Penumbra founder and artistic director Lou Bellamy, who directed Paris and Jamecia in 2004's "Reflections of Black Nativity." "When (Paris) auditioned, it was clear that she was very special."

Bennett first showed national television audiences how special she was when her "American Idol" audition aired to more than 30 million viewers in late January. The tiny teen seemed to catch the trio of judges by surprise with her vocal power as she sang the Dixie Chicks' "Cowboy Take Me Away" and Billie Holiday's "Take Five."

Paula Abdul called her performance "phenomenal." Cranky Simon Cowell called it "unbelievable" — and this time he meant it in a good way.

Locals who have worked with Bennett agree with the judges.

Edina High School theater adviser Tony Matthes remembers when Bennett tried out for "The Wiz."

"I had four senior girls going for the lead role of Dorothy, and they all had great auditions," Matthes said. "Then Paris got up there and hit a high C that was improvised. I could see the other girls step back, and then I saw the look of disappointment on their faces. A couple of them got on their cell phones to say, 'Mom, I'm not going to play Dorothy.' "

Christopher "Kit" Treece, who co-starred with Bennett in "The Wiz," said she was a hard worker.

Clarkson forgets to thank American Idol

Kelly Clarkson became the first 'American Idol' contestant to pick up Grammy Awards last night, but did not thank the television show that helped her to shoot to fame.

Clarkson won in the Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance categories but didn't mention that talent show that made her a household name in either of her two acceptance speeches.

The singer thanked Jesus, God, the radio, her fans and her mother when she collected her first award and later shed a tear while collecting her second award. "I don't know what is going on but thank you Jesus and God and everyone else who supported my career," she said.

When asked backstage why she hadn't mentioned 'American Idol', Clarkson said that she had thanked the show indirectly when she mentioned her fans. She said she also forgot to thank other people in her speeches.

"I forgot to thank my dad and the rest of my family. I did thank the fans and that's 'American Idol'," she said.

She also said that the omission was not connected to recent comments made by 'American Idol' judge Simon Cowell, who claimed that she had refused to let the show use her hit songs. But a spokesperson for Clarkson had denied that there was any dispute with the show.

A CBS spokesperson also confirmed that the singer was not restricted during her acceptance speeches last night. "She's absolutely free to say whatever she wants up there," he said.

Dualistic local makes debut on tonight's American Idol

Sharolyn Gabbitas knew a talented singer needed more than a good voice to impress American Idol judges. Wearing a half man and half woman costume she belted out a duet with herself -- "You Don't Bring Me Flowers," a cover of a Barbra Streisand/Neil Diamond tune.

Gabbitas, 28, decided to take her chances and go for the extreme to be one of the few aired on the largest talent show on television -- American Idol. The Provo resident realized the exposure on the show reaches millions and with that so could her voice.

"I never had a doubt that I wouldn't be grabbed up and taken and put on the show," she said. "It was all for fun."

Gabbitas's debut will air tonight on American Idol's Las Vegas segment, but getting to this 20 seconds of fame took more than a costume. Gabbitas first auditioned in Denver, but didn't make the initial cut.

"I've been singing for a really long time," she said. "I recognize that there are some far better vocalists than myself."

After being rejected from the Denver auditions, Gabbitas had formed some theories about what types of talent American Idol chooses to televise. They let through a handful of people based on certain looks or their voice and another category for the gimmicks and bloopers section, she said.

"This is less of a reality show and talent competition than people think," she said.

Rather than just theorizing, Gabbitas put her thoughts into action.

One of the biggest American Idol stories of the week has been the continued saga of the American Idol twins: Terrell Brittenum and Derrell Brittenum. They were the first two contestants to make it through to Hollywood on the American Idol premiere, and they are apparently the first two contestants to get disqualified from the competition. Terrell and Derrell Brittenum wound up in jail over allegedly buying a car using another man’s identity. Even though there has been no official press release from FOX in regards to the status of the Brittenum twins, MTV.com reports that the twins are out on bond and that their lawyer told an Atlanta radio station that they were “uninvited” from the competition.

The twins aren’t the only American Idol contestants making news about their run-ins with the law. Even though Rhonetta Johnson didn’t make it through to the next round of the competition, her profanity-filled tirade against Paula Abdul made her one of the more memorable contestants of the American Idol Greensboro, North Carolina auditions. Wizbang Pop! reports on some previous arrests of Rhonetta for DWI and some other charges.

A former contestant is also making news. The New York Daily News is reporting on a National Enquirer article where a former Army Ranger is claiming to have had unprotected sex with Clay Aiken. The New York Daily News points out that when they contacted John Paulus that he swore “he wasn’t going to sell out singer Clay Aiken,” but something evidently changed his mind and now his story is in the National Enquirer.

Most of this week's major celebrity magazines have a couple pages devoted to some of the worst American Idol auditions. People Magazine (print edition) has a quote from Zachary Travis, who gained fame when he stormed out the auditions blaming his elimination on prejudice. Zachary is quoted as telling People, “I am whatever you want me to be. If you think I’m a boy, I’m a boy. If you think I’m a girl, I’m a girl. I don’t make it a big issue. And, yeah, when I can afford it, I want to get the operation.” While Us Weekly (print edition) was able to catch up with sexy dancer Yuliya Matus, who claimed to need Idol in order to get her visa renewed so she could stay in the U.S. According to Us Weekly, Yuliya’s visa was renewed anyway.

Paris Bennett Proves Early Idol Favorite

t's a win-win situation for American Idol: Tuesday's episode drew a still-staggering 34.8 million viewers (down only slightly from last week's 35.5 million for the season premiere), and the show has a clear-cut victor – if TV writers from The New York Times and Entertainment Weekly are to be believed.

She is 17-year-old Paris Bennett of Fayetteville, Ga., and she's been called "adorable" by the New York Post. Meanwhile, Bennett's set of pipes that is causing hats to be tossed into the air, even from the usually critical judge Simon Cowell.

Out On Bail, 'Idol' Twins Say They've Been Dropped From Show

There's good news and bad news for "American Idol" twins Derrell and Terrell Brittenum. The good news is they're both out on bond after being jailed for allegedly using false identification to buy a car last summer.

The bad news is that the flap over the theft charges has resulted in them being booted from "American Idol," they told an Atlanta radio station on Monday.

"They were in here Monday singing and everything," said Frank Ski, co-host of WVEE-FM's "Frank & Wanda in the Morning" show. "They got out of jail on Sunday and came here Monday to be on the air with us."

Ski said he tried to jump right in and ask the 28-year-olds about the warrants from Rockdale County, Georgia, on charges of forgery, theft by deception and financial identity fraud, but their lawyer said they weren't allowed to comment. I am taking the Mac route tonight ... Since Fox insists on making me sit through so many auditions, I am just hitting the high notes.

• The show rarely kicks off with someone worthwhile. If you are looking for real "American Idols," you still have time to grab a snack during the first 10 minutes of the show.

• Jerry Springer jokes still work. Unfortunately, potential Jerry panelists do not.

• If you get an extended profile, you are more likely getting a ticket to Hollywood.

• Randy's shirt was a little too pitchy for me.

• There was certainly more than one dummy on tonight's episode -- and I'm not talking about the guy with the puppet.

• Do you think Simon has any respect for Paula as a singer? Either way, I'm sure he wouldn’t be alone.

• Paula is immune to no man -- especially if he can actually sing.

• Is the theme to the TV show "A Different World" an actual song?

• Fellas: Stay off the Whitney. And while you're at it, scratch Mariah, Celine and Cher off your lists too.

• I don't care what anyone says: The 17-year-old with the squeaky speaking voice is the next "American Idol." If not, you can at least expect a record contract. Wow.

• A tube top does not make you a star (not even a porn star), even if it is sparkly. Apparently though, it sometimes makes you a delusional psycho.

American Idol - Gay or GLADD?

GLAAD concerned about gays on American Idol
You've probably read somewhere that Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) has called American Idol "increasingly homophobic." The controversy starts with episode one, where Charles Berry was denied entry into the competition. He had auditioned before and each time was denied, but given advice. He claimed to have followed all of their advice. This time Simon Cowell told him to shave his beard and wear a dress.

Then the next episode, we met Zachary Travis. Wearing high heals, a girly shirt, and a girl's haircut. He came in speaking like a girl, talking about how people keep asking him if he's a girl. So of course Randy Jackson bit, asking him if he was a girl. Duh, what do you expect people to do if you confuse them like that. Anyhow, he was turned down because he couldn't sing.

So now we're at the point where GLAAD gets involved. According to the GLAAD website, they have only ever made three comments about the issue. First up:
All fair and good, after all, AI has never been overly gay-friendly. Simon has poked fun at male contestants who weren't manly enough (for example the runner-up in Season Two whose name I am loath to mention as it will bring his rabid fans down upon me). Simon and host Ryan Seacrest trade jabs with each other, each either calling the other gay or implying it. So yeah, go ahead and talk to the producers about the show being more gay-friendly. I personally don't think it will work, but if it makes you feel better, why not?

'Idol' Judges' Comments Stir Response From GLAAD

NEW YORK, Jan. 23 -- Fox's "American Idol" drew an objection from the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) after judges Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson made what the gay rights group deemed questionable comments on last week's season premiere episode.

On last Tuesday's show, seen by a Nielsen-chart-topping 35.5 million viewers, Cowell told one male contestant to "wear a dress" and Jackson asked another, "Are you a girl?"

Damon Romine, a spokesman for GLAAD, said in a statement posted on the group's Web site that "the real offense here was in the producer's decision to add insult to injury by turning a contestant's gender expression into the butt of a joke."

On Monday Romine updated the situation with another statement: "We've spoken with Fox and have entered into what we hope will be a productive, ongoing conversation about the show's representation and discussion of sexual orientation and gender expression."

A spokesman for "American Idol" said Monday that Fox had no comment.

Fugitive 'American Idol' Twin Surrenders To Police

The Brittenum twins from "American Idol" have finally been reunited — albeit in jail, in neighboring states. After being on the lam for a week, Derrell Brittenum, 28, turned himself in to Georgia authorities late Friday and spent the weekend in
a Rockdale County, Georgia cell.

Meanwhile, his smooth-singing twin, Terrell — who has been in the Shelby County, Tennessee jail since January 10 — changed his mind late Friday and waived extradition to Georgia on theft charges related to the alleged purchase of a car using false identification (see " 'American Idol' Twins Are In Double Trouble With The Law"). An attorney for Terrell Brittenum told Memphis' Commercial-Appeal that his client originally asked for a hearing Monday (January 23) to challenge the extradition to Georgia in the case, but then reconsidered.

The Brittenums had outstanding criminal warrants when their "American Idol" audition aired last week. Both had been charged in Rockdale County, Georgia with forgery, theft by deception and financial identity fraud over the purchase of a 2005 Dodge Magnum last June, which they allegedly made using another man's identity.

TWINS SAYS THEY’RE INNOCENT

ATTORNEY FOR ‘IDOL’ TWINS SAYS THEY’RE INNOCENT: Statement emphasizes brothers’ community work; gospel background.

*An attorney for Derrell and Terrell Brittenum, the twin “American Idol” contestants charged with forgery and theft by deception in their Memphis hometown, has released a statement claiming that her clients are innocent.

“At this point and time, Derrell and Terrell Brittenum are innocent of all charges,” said their Atlanta-based lawyer, LaTisha Dear. “We are investigating the case and anticipate a swift release."

Terrell has been locked up at the Shelby County jail since Jan. 10, and was unable to watch his taped audition on “Idol” when it aired last Tuesday.

"Unfortunately, he didn't have access to the (jail) television at the time," Shelby County Sheriff's spokesman Steve Shular told Reuters.

Meanwhile, the twins' mother called police to say Derrell would turn himself in, but he had yet to do so and was being sought by authorities, Shular added.

The 28-year-olds are alleged to have used another person’s identity to purchase a truck in Rockdale County, Georgia last June.

The press release containing Dear’s statements went on to sing the twins’ praises, noting the birth of their singing career in the church and their eight-year stint with local gospel group Kevin Davis & the Voices, a.k.a. The Voices of Binghampton in Memphis, Tennessee.

“The Brittenums' first big break came in 1997 on MTV's The Cut, where they performed original music,” the release states. “As a result, they landed multiple opportunities to travel nationally on various tours with national recording artists such as Kirk Franklin, Yolanda Adams, Clark Sisters, and Kim Burrell, just to name a few.”

The brothers moved to Atlanta for a brief period to try out the music scene, but grew homesick and returned to Memphis.

“Derrell and Terrell Brittenum are not hard core criminals,” the release states. “They are individuals that give back to their community by mentoring to the youth in their neighborhood, working with their Youth Outreach Ministries, Senior Citizens and local neighborhood cleanup efforts.”

Derrell states: “All we really want to do is make great music. We know that in the end we will be exonerated of all charges and continue our mission to make great music.”

Not the first arrest for American Idol twins

Terrell and Derrell Brittenum, the first set of twins to rock the American Idol auditions last week, have a history of run-ins with the law. Terrell has been in a Georgia jail since January 10th. He was arrested on a warrant for using someone else's identity to buy a $23,000 Dodge Magnum. His brother, Derrell, is wanted on the same charges.

The Brittenum brothers also have criminal records in Shelby County, Tennessee (they're from Memphis). Terrell has a handful fo traffic citations and he was also charged with a misdemeanor for disorderly conduct and indecent exposure. Derrell was arrested for stealing more than $500 and writing bad checks.

I'm pretty sure American Idol does background checks on its contestants now, but I'm not sure at what juncture in the process they do them so it's unclear whether Idol producers knew about the twins' past.

Brooke Barrettsmith, American Idol 5

Brooke Barrettsmith performed on the American Idol premiere with her sister Leah Barrettsmith. Brooke Barrettsmith is a 23 year old female from Spring Grove, Illinois. Brooke sang “It’s In His Kiss” during her audition.

The Barrettsmith girls were introduced in a lengthy background segment, involving their hometown of Spring Grove, Illinois. The sisters introduced the “infamous 4-way stoplight from their hometown.” They also introduced the World’s Largest Corn Maze, which is cut into a tribute to the Chicago Bears winning the Super Bowl in 1985.

What the background segment that portrayed them as small-town girls did not mention is that Brooke and Leah Barrettsmith are experienced Christian Rock musicians. The sisters have been in a band called Two 4 One, which won a contest held by Morgan Cryar and Premier Records where the prize was full production of a single called "My 911."

Two 4 One at one time had their own website, but the website is no longer online. History of the website shows that in the past the girls had a development deal with Word Records of Nashville, Tennessee. The website also mentioned that they had shared the stage with artists such as “Steven Curtis Chapman, Audio Adrenaline, Tait, Toby Mac, SuperChick, Jake, Paul Coleman Trio, Sonic Flood, Hangnail, By The Tree, Chris Rice, Jeremy Camp and many others.”

Mandisa Hundley American Idol 5

She told the judges to just call her Mandisa, but her full name is actually Mandisa Hundley. Mandisa is a 28 year old female from Antioch, Tennessee, and she is an experienced Gospel singer. For her audition, Mandisa sang “Falling,” and Simon Cowell said she was “everything I hoped you would be.” Mandisa received a unanimous yes vote from all three judges.

fter her audition, Simon Cowell made some comments that have drawn criticism from some American Idol fans as being exceptionally cruel. Mandisa is a heavy-set woman, and Simon remarked “Do we have a bigger stage this year?” After Paul compared Mandisa to Frenchie, Simon responded “Forget Frenchie, she’s like France.”

Mandisa had a website located at www.mandisaministries.com, but the website has been shut down, presumable as a requirement for her participation in American Idol.

Before the website was shut down, Mandisa’s biography pointed to a wealth of professional musical experience. Mandisa Hundley was born in Sacremento, California and moved to Tennessee to get her degree in vocal performance from Fisk University. She was a member of the Fisk Jubilee Singers. Some of the artists that Mandisa has performed with include “Shania Twain, Trisha Yearwood, Take 6, Larnelle Harris, and Willie Neal Johnson & the Gospel Keynotes.”

Mandisa has also performed with Integrity Music and Don Moen. Her website listed several recordings that she can be heard on: Don Moen’s “Thank You Lord” and Sandi Patti’s “Hymns of Faith…Songs of Inspiration”, and Travis Cottrell’s “Beloved Disciple” and “The Deep”. Mandisa was also “the worship leader for the 2004 LifeWay Christian Women’s Conventions held in Orlando, San Diego, and San Antonio.”

Gina Glocksen is probably best remembered from the American Idol 5 premiere as the girl who said “I think Simon is just the hottest thing I’ve ever seen. He looks beautiful, even more beautiful in person. I want to cry.” The praise earned Gina Glocksen one of the most lengthy background segments on the premiere.

Gina Glocksen is a 21 year old female from Naperville, Illinois. Gina is a dental assistant and says “there is so much more to it than besides you know the suctioning of saliva.” Gina is also a member of an all girl band called Catfight. Gina was in a wedding band before joining Catfight.

Gina sang “Power of Love“ by Celine Dion for her audition in front of the judges. She scored points with Simon Cowell by changing the lyrics to say “Simon’s my man.” Simon called it “a beautiful, beautiful change in lyrics.” Gina received a unanimous vote to go through to Hollywood.

Gina’s band Catfight has a website, but Gina’s bio is not included and she is not listed as a member of the band (probably removed at the request of American Idol). The four members of Catfight are listed as Loricat, Little Lisa, Rockin’ Rose, and Molly C. Molly C. is listed as the newest member of the band, so she could be taking Gina’s place while Gina fulfills her American Idol commitments.

American Idol: The 'Super-Tan Girl'

Those that caught the still incredibly popular American Idol's debut this week caught several decent sideshows including some pretty talented twins that are in trouble with the law. But the classic came on night one in Chicago as the gal now dubbed the 'Super-Tan girl,' Crystal Parizanski made her debut.

Was it a train wreck? I think that depends on one's point of view.

GAY RIGHTS GROUP: 'AMERICAN IDOL IS HOMOPHOBIC'

Bosses at America's leading gay rights group are demanding a summit meeting with the producers of TV talent show AMERICAN IDOL after claiming the programme is "increasingly homophobic".

Officials at the Gay And Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) were appalled by homophobic remarks made by judges SIMON COWELL and RANDY JACKSON on the first show of the new season, which aired in America on Tuesday (17JAN06).

On the programme, Brit Cowell told one effeminate wannabe to "shave off your beard and wear a dress," while Jackson asked another audition hopeful, "Are you a girl?" Both contestants were rejected.

Now GLAAD bosses are fighting back, demanding an audience with Idol bosses.

A spokesman tells entertainment news website TMZ.com, "GLAAD is reaching out to the show's producers to discuss our concerns and the concerns of community members and allies, who have contacted us about this matter."

'Idol' Twins Charged With Forgery, Theft

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- They sang like angels for their audition on Tuesday's "American Idol" premiere, but a pair of Memphis twins may sound more like jailbirds by the time the show goes live from Hollywood.

Terrell Brittenum, 28, has been in jail since Jan. 10 on an outstanding warrant for charges related to the illegal purchase of a car in Rockdale County, Ga., east of Atlanta.

He and his brother, Derrell, are accused of using another man's identity to buy a 2005 Dodge Magnum in June.

Derrell was expected to turn himself in on the same charges of forgery, theft by deception and financial identity fraud, The Commercial Appeal newspaper reported.

The brothers auditioned together in September for the hit TV show 'American Idol' and impressed the show's prickly judges to continue to the next round. Segments of the show have already been recorded and will air during the next few weeks.

Fox Broadcasting Co. refused to discuss the Brittenums or their status on the show.

The return of the show Tuesday drew its best-ever season premiere ratings with 35.5 million viewers. It was a 6 percent increase over last year's debut, according to preliminary Nielsen Media Research figures.

Kelly Clarkson settles `Idol` dispute

LOS ANGELES, CA, United States (UPI) -- Kelly Clarkson, the original 'American Idol,' has relented and agreed to let contestants on the Fox TV show sing her songs.

Judge Simon Cowell attacked the superstar in the press this week after it became known she had refused to sign licensing papers allowing 'American Idol' to use her music during the current competition.

A Sony BMG spokesman said Clarkson`s refusal to let 'Idol' use her music wasn`t a slam to the show, since she had made a decision not to let anyone or anything use her material.

However, Cowell took offense and went on the defense.

'No matter how talented Kelly Clarkson is, she would not be in the position she`s in now without winning this show,' Cowell said Tuesday.

A day later, Clarkson`s rep announced she had reconsidered and decided to let 'Idol' use her songs 'within reason,' E! said.

Kelly Clarkson won't let new contestants use her songs on the television show.

Man Charged for Stalking Ex-'American Idol'

A California man stalked a former "American Idol" contestant, sending her threatening voice mail messages and showing up at her grandmother's Florida house uninvited, authorities charged.

Daniel Robert Young, 59, was being held without bond after his arrest Tuesday.

Police said Young had placed at least 38 voice mail messages since mid-September to former "AI" top-ten finalist Jessica Sierra, police said.

In the calls, police said, he told Sierra, 20, that he loves her and was willing to go to jail for her. He sent her a necklace, a bracelet and dozens of long-stemmed roses after seeing her singing on the Fox talent show, police said.

"It was like the more I stopped answering my phone and stopped talking to him, he got even more mad," Sierra said. "He was like, `Answer your damn phone when I call you.'"

Sierra, a Tampa native, appeared on the show last year.

When he arrived in Tampa on Tuesday from California, Young called Sierra's cell phone twice and asked her to pick him up, a police spokeswoman said.

"I told him, `I'm not coming to pick you up,'" Sierra said. "He said, `If you don't come pick me up, I'm taking a cab to your grandparents' house.'"

American Idol hopefuls face trouble back home

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Twin brothers whose videotaped performance on Fox TV's "American Idol" earned them a trip to Hollywood face trouble back home in Memphis, with one of them in jail at the time the show aired, police said on Thursday.

It seems doubtful Terrell and Derrell Brittenum, 28, will make the next round of the top-rated show after their taped Chicago audition drew praise from "American Idol's" panel of judges.

Terrell could not even watch himself on the show that aired on Tuesday because he was sitting in the Shelby County jail, where he has been held on charges of forgery and theft by deception since January 10, Shelby County Sheriff's spokesman Steve Shular said.

"Unfortunately, he didn't have access to the (jail) television at the time," Shular said.

The twins' mother called police to say Derrell would turn himself in, but he had yet to do so and was being sought by authorities, Shular said.

The charges relate to the purchase of a car in June in Rockdale County, Georgia, where the brothers are suspected of using another man's identity.

A spokesman for the television show would not comment on the "personal lives of their contestants," or on future episodes. Early episodes focus on tryouts around the country to select semifinalists who come to Hollywood to compete in weekly elimination rounds. The winner gets a shot at fame and a recording contract.

‘American Idol’ auditions deliberately hurtful

The premiere of season five of ‘American Idol’ proved one thing: Fox continues to raise the bar for insipid programming. The program featured Idol hopefuls as they auditioned in Chicago. The tedious two hour show should be considered by the U.S. military for use in torturing suspected terrorists; it’s that friggin’ awful.

During the show’s opening Idol host Ryan Suckcrest proclaimed that Idol has become “an integral part of American culture,” and “a part of growing up.” Well f me sideways!

The Idol audition premise is simple: Show as many hopeful contestants who don’t really have a chance at becoming the next Idol and then belittle, degrade and embarrass them on camera. The manipulation of contestants’ feelings is wholly mean spirited and the intent to capture “real life” angst makes for lame TV.

The show hit an all-time new low during the audition of Charles Berry, from nearby Darby, Pennsylvania. Admittedly Mr. Berry’s audition illustrated that he is cut out for a career other than singing, as are many Idol hopefuls.

Instead of making a snarky comment about Mr. Berry’s singing, Simon Cowell used the opportunity to make deliberately derogatory statements regarding Mr. Berry’s sexuality, including advising him to become a transvestite. And to what end?

American Idol 5 – The Year Of The Twins

What is it about twins and reality TV shows? First, Big Brother had its twin twist, where a set of twins secretly kept trading places in the Big Brother house. Then, Survivor had several contestants who had twins, even though it never factored into the show. Now, America Idol appears to be on a twin kick.

Only a handful of the contestants that made it through to Hollywood during the American Idol 5 auditions in Chicago were shown during the premiere. Of this select group of lucky contestants, there were two different sets of twins. Twins Derrell & Terrell Brittennum were told that they “have made the other twins in the competition pale in comparison.” Of course that was before Joshua & Jarrett Simmons performed and also made it through. Simon Cowell didn’t seem quite as impressed with the second set of twins, questioning if they would have made it through if they hadn’t been twins.

In addition to twins, there was also a set of sisters that made it through to Hollywood. Brook & Leah Barrettsmith were given a lengthy background segment. They were from a small town in Illinois that was home to the world’s largest corn maze.

Who will judge the judges?

PASADENA, CALIF. - It would have been nice to ask all of the American Idol judges precisely what they were thinking when they allowed "Crazy Dave" to go on to Hollywood. But all the judges weren't in attendance Tuesday for Idol's session with the television press.

Paula Abdul was a no-show.

Abdul had been cleared of any wrongdoing by Fox, which looked into her involvement with Corey Clark, an Idol finalist who claims to have had an affair with her during competition, but she's still the target of journalistic inquiry.

A Fox publicist said that sometime between her appearance on Monday night's Tonight Show and Tuesday morning's press panel, Abdul developed an eye infection and was en route to a doctor.

Had she appeared, she would have gotten at least a question or two about Clark.

American Idol is the US version of British TV hit show Pop Idol. American Idol is featured on the Fox Network in the United States, and other versions of the show are broadcast on CTV in Canada (Canadian Idol), and Australian Idol on Ten Network in Australia. Pop Idol/Amercan Idol was created by Simon Fuller (creator of the Spice Girls and S Club 7) and Simon Cowell, the latter being one of the judges on both Pop Idol and American Idol. American Idol is singing talent contest in which viewers can call in and vote on contestants to determine the best “undiscovered” young singer in the United States, with the winner receiving a major record deal, although many runners-up — most of the top twelve of each season — have achieved enough fame and popularity to sign record deals of their own.

American Idol is produced by Fremantle North America which is owned by German Bertelsmann. Each contestant gets a contract with one of Bertelsmann’s many music labels because Bertelsmann owns half of Sony BMG.

n the show, hosted by Ryan Seacrest (lone host since season 2), hopeful contestants, after being screened by preliminary panels which select for singing talent or humorous potential and human interest, audition before three judges (Simon Cowell (one of the judges from Pop Idol), Paula Abdul, and Randy Jackson) in cities across the United States (sometimes a celebrity fourth judge is added). These are generally held at large convention centers where thousands of people wait in line for auditions. In order to be eligible, the contestants are not permitted to have any current recording or talent management agreements (but may have had one at some point in the past). Based on turnout and availability, producers select a certain number from the crowd to audition before the three judges (this usually takes 2-4 rounds). Contestants are required to sing a cappella. Constantine Maroulis signs for TV sitcom

The as yet unnamed show is being produced by Kelsey Grammer's company, Maroulis told People.

Maroulis, 30, who finished in sixth place last season, says Idol was the best thing that's ever happened to him and so was losing.

By the time the "American Idols" Live Tour 2005 takes over the Onondaga County War Memorial with its nine (down from 10, but more on that later) TV stars and what's sure to be a flock of shrieking fans, the singers will have been on the road together just shy of two months.

The tour that started July 12 in Sunrise, Fla., ends right here in Syracuse.

According to Constantine Maroulis, the final 10 from the 2005 version of Fox's popular TV show still feel like a big family.

"I'm loving it. I love being on the road," Maroulis says during a phone interview on Aug. 24, when the show was in Portland, Ore. "I dig it. The whole lifestyle, I love it."

Maroulis indeed sounds like he's having a blast, even after he was handed the phone by a tour publicist and the duty is to talk to a reporter he has never met.

He doesn't sound rushed, even though the publicist has set a time frame of five to 10 minutes for the interview.

And he doesn't sound frazzled about the absence of the 2005 runner-up, Bo Bice, who had to leave the tour less than a week earlier for what Bice's Web site reported as emergency intestinal surgery.

Maybe that's because he doesn't have to talk about Bice, the long-haired singer (just like Maroulis) who constantly was grouped with Maroulis during the show's run in a duo that was called "the rockers."

The publicist set that limit, too, requesting the reporter not to ask about Bice. She says about the situation: "We're taking it day by day. Our hopes and prayers are with him. Everybody on the tour wants him to get back to full health as soon as possible." A few days later, reports came out that Bice would miss the rest of the tour.

'Idol' Dropout Mario Vazquez Says 'Everything Is Falling Into Place'

Not only did "American Idol" dropout Mario Vazquez sign with the record company most closely affiliated with the show, he auditioned for the label with the same song that initially advanced him on "Idol."

Happens,' " Vazquez recalled of his audition for J Records founder and occasional "Idol" guest judge Clive Davis. "Realizing that this legend-maker has lots of interest in you is crazy. You just want to do the best you can and that's exactly what I did and fortunately enough, I got signed."

So if it's the same guy and same song, why did he quit "American Idol"? At the time, just after he was chosen as one of the 12 finalists, Vazquez would only say it was for "personal reasons," which led to speculation that he had cooked up a recording contract and wanted to distance himself from the top-rated talent contest (see "Mario Vazquez Quits 'Idol' — 'It Wasn't Right For Me' ").

Now, the 28-year-old Bronx, New York, native admits that he took several meetings and multiple offers just after he left, although he's using the same wording as before to explain himself.

"It's all personal," he said Friday. "I felt at the time the competition wasn't right for me. The show did help me a lot, especially in getting comfortable in my own skin as a performer on such big stages, and realizing the public liked what I did. It definitely boosted my confidence. But I just went with my intuition and took a risk and by taking that risk I could pursue my goals and my dreams in my way. It's all for a reason, it's funny how things work."

Vazquez said he has no regrets about his decision and considers his signing to J, home to "Idol" winners Carrie Underwood, Fantasia Barrino and Ruben Studdard, a coincidence. "[Davis] is a musicmaker, and be it through the show or by myself, he enjoyed what he saw [in me]."

Apparently. In a statement, Davis called Vazquez "a multitalented, young American-born Hispanic singer with the voice and charisma that we've been trying to find for a long time."

Mario is already working on his as-yet-untitled debut album, scheduled for a spring release.

"It's going to be a fusion of everything I've grown up with living in New York City," he said. "I love the sounds of Latin jazz, R&B, hip-hop, alternative, all that stuff. I'm a radio kid."

So far, he's co-written or worked in the studio with producers Soulshock and Karlin (Usher), the Underdogs (Fantasia) and Lester Mendez (Shakira). He's also planning to collaborate with Akon and Alicia Keys. "I just feel that vibe happening, both of us coming from New York," he said of Keys.

Vazquez, who attended New York's LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts and was a member of the City Kids Repertoire Company, said he watched the rest of "American Idol" and still talks to some of the contestants, including close friend Nadia Turner.

"I wanted to support them," he said. "They decided to go all the way with it and they're enjoying themselves."

Bo Bice undergoes surgery in Vegas

Bo Bice's health problems have worsened.

Surgeons at Desert Springs Hospital in Las Vegas operated on Bice on Friday night for a stomach ailment, according to his grandmother, "Granny Madge" Schofield of Somerville.

She said her daughter and Bice's mother, Nancy Downes, phoned from Birmingham on Friday about 7:30 p.m. to tell her that Bice was "about to go into surgery. She phoned Saturday about 2 a.m. and told me that Bo came through the surgery well."

Downes left Birmingham three hours later on a flight to Las Vegas, where Bice missed an "American Idols Live!" concert Thursday night, prompting e-mails to THE DAILY from concerned fans across the country.

Kelly Clarkson of American Idol: No Movies, Just a Grammy

"American Idol" winner-cum-pop princess Kelly Clarkson has a stack of scripts that have been submitted to her by moviemakers hoping she'll land in their pictures, and "It puzzles me completely. I hated the movie I did before," she says, referring to the flop 2003 "From Justin to Kelly: With Love" -- which rated two out of 10 stars on the Internet Movie Database and the user comment, "I don't want to live anymore."

"Everyone knew I didn't want to do it, but I had to," Kelly says, contractually speaking, "and I don't particularly want to do more."

That's not to say that Kelly is ruling out acting forever: "I always get bored, and I like to do different things, but it isn't something I'm going to do in the near future."

Asked about what she WOULD like to do, the blunt songstress with the soaring voice says, "Oh, I'd like to win a Grammy. I'm not really one for awards, and I don't care about them, usually. But to win a Grammy -- something I've been watching since I was a kid -- that would be great. Some people want to win six in a year. I only want one. Then I'll appreciate it completely."

Clarkson wraps her current tour Sept. 16, then she will take a month off before starting a Euro tour. As for plotting her next album, "I'm always writing," she says. "It's better for me out on the road. You get these ideas in your head and -- something just happens."

Carrie reads message boards during the show.

In an interview with the Arizona Republic, Carrie Underwood has taken dead aim at all the bashers on the message boards. When asked if she read the boards during the competition, Carrie said, "Unfortunately, I was into reading it. It was the worst thing I could have done. People can be horrible. I didn't feel bad for myself. I felt bad for my parents and the parents of the other contestants. There's no time to get used to it. Most people (in the public eye) have three or four years to get used to that kind of thing."

Carrie spoke directly to those guilty of this behavior. "To anyone who ever said anything bad on a message board, I want them to imagine someone saying those kinds of things about their kids. I would read the message boards, and they said awful things." You tell 'em, Carrie.

Carrie said that the negative press and nasty message boards really hurt Mikalah Gordon, who started out not caring what people thought. "Then she started caring about what people thought, and it broke her."

'Idol' Defector Mario Gets Big Deal

You may recall the story about Mario Vazquez, the kid who bolted mid-season from "American Idol" last winter. He'd been convinced by his lawyer — the same lawyer who represented Clay Aiken — to leave the show rather than stay and sign a management contract with the "Idol" producers.

I can tell you now that the strategy worked. Mario, according to my sources, has signed a lucrative deal with legendary record executive Clive Davis and Davis' J Records.

Even better: Vazquez will be managed by another legend, Arnold Steifel, the man who has guided Rod Stewart's rocketing career for over 30 years.

The deal will be announced right after Labor Day, sources tell me. But no time is being wasted: even as we speak, Vazquez is in the studio recording tracks under Davis' watchful eye.

This news should be a big deal for several reasons: If Vazquez had stayed on "American Idol" and won — which he likely would have done — he would have wound up on J Records anyway.

The main difference is now he won't have to live under a management agreement with 19 Entertainment and Simon Fuller.

Fuller doesn't look so good in this deal, but you never know. Perhaps sensing an end to "American Idol" madness, he sold his company for millions of dollars earlier this year.

And there's a rumor that "Idol" winners will no longer record for J Records. Fuller is said to be shopping around for a new home.

Davis, as usual, comes out on top. He has the next big pop star and is off the hook if "Idol" is indeed on the wane.

The Web site says that recent "buzz" suggesting that she's singing to a backup track has been amplified by a Pennsylvania newspaper review reminding Clarkson that "when you pull the microphone away from your mouth, all singing should cease."

American Idol - hiding the truth

There are two things to be said. Did Corey make-up the story of him and Paula? Or are they hiding it? It may be in their best interest to hide the truth. They may feel American Idol may lose it's edge if Paula goes. Or, they may feel the controversy will added to next seasons viewing.

They are looking to make the next American Idol the biggest ever. Wouldn't this help them? Won't it be fun to see if Paula take to another contestant? You know she won't. But, FOX may try to lead us to believe their might. American Idol would "Jump the Shark" if Paula were to go. So, that is why..even if she was found guilty FOX won't tell us.

May be good if they found nothing. But, I bet you if the FOX series ever needs a push... I bet they all of a sudden something is found out.

Carrie honored by governor

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Carrie Underwood, the sweet, emotional American Idol winner, was hailed Wednesday as Oklahoma's No. 1 ambassador by Gov. Brad Henry, who presented her with a replica of highway signs posted outside her hometown of Checotah.

Tears welled in Underwood's eyes after Henry called her "a quintessential Oklahoman" who was loved for being "a genuine person" as for her singing talent.

"It's so good to be home ... . I know I don't deserve any of this," said Underwood, who was in Oklahoma for a concert in Norman, along with many of her former competitors on Fox Network's American Idol television show.

Two 18-feet-by-7 feet signs and two 14-by-6-feet signs were posted along Interstate 40 and U.S. 69 outside Checotah, about 120 miles east of Oklahoma City. They read: "Checotah, Home of Carrie Underwood, American Idol 2005."

"These signs reflect the great pride that we Oklahomans have for Carrie," the governor said. "Carrie is talented, graceful, charming, hardworking and a testament to what can happen when people follow their dreams."

Underwood, 22, said the American Idol concert tour has been fun, but a little hectic at times.

For instance, her tour bus did not roll into Oklahoma until early Wednesday. "The first thing I did this morning when we got in was take a shower. We'd been on the bus all night, so I really needed one."

She said it was the first time she had been at the Capitol since she was a legislative page.

The best thing about her experience as the American Idol winner is that "I just get to do what I love every single day," she said, calling herself "the luckiest person in the world."

Underwood, who wept unabashedly when she won the American Idol contest in May, said she brags on her state every where she goes. "If we ever run into a problem anywhere, I say, 'this would not happen in Oklahoma."'

A lover of chocolate, she said she has been "doing good" limiting her indulgence to "just a little a day."

She shrugged off a question about having a boyfriend. "I don't think there's really that much time" for dating, she said.

Despite her busy singing career, endorsements and various show business opportunities, Underwood said she hopes to finish the half semester she lacks to get her college degree. She said she also plans to do charity work for the American Humane Society.

As her news conference was wrapping up, 10-year-old Ashley Acker of South Lake, Texas, stepped to the podium, held out a camera and asked if Underwood would be in a photograph with her.

Underwood smiled and put her arms around the little girl as someone took a picture. She then signed autographs for several admirers before being whisked away by handlers.

Ashley, brought to the Capitol by her grandmother, Diane Raney of Checotah, said she was not afraid to approach the celebrity in front of the jammed packed Blue Room outside the governor's office.

"I was excited. I think she is very nice. She's got a really great voice. She's my hero and my idol. I want to be a singer just like Carrie," Ashley said.

SIMON COWELL SUED OVER NEW ABC TV SHOW

A lawsuit to be filed in Federal Court in Los Angeles on Wednesday claims AMERICAN IDOL star Simon Cowell and ABC Television Network conspired to steal the trademarked brand “Million Dollar Idea”, copy the entire premise of a show already airing in national syndication on over 125 television stations, and market that idea as their own.

The DRUDGE REPORT has learned, the federal case is being brought by original “Million Dollar Idea” creators/hosts Jean Golden and Todd Walker. It is a direct response to ABC’s July 13, 2005 announcement of a new show of the same name, “created” by Cowell and “packaged” by CAA.

“From stem to stern, each and every detail of Simon Cowell and ABC’s mock ‘Million Dollar Idea’ is a patent rip-off of Todd and Jean’s four-year labor of love,” said attorney Pierce O'Donnell.

ABC did not return calls for comment early Wednesday.

The lawsuit calls for immediate injunctive relief and unspecified damages.

“It is incredibly ironic that our show, the premise of which is to promote, protect and reward small-town American ingenuity, was itself the victim of corporate theft and greed,” said Jean Golden, co-creator of Million Dollar Idea. “What has happened to us is every inventor/entrepreneur’s worst nightmare: having your idea stolen. The arrogance of Simon Cowell and ABC is beyond comprehension. Can you imagine stealing an idea and not even bothering to change the name of it?”

“We are outraged that Simon Cowell, and ABC Network think that they are above the law,” said Todd Walker. “We were taken aback to see our brand so brazenly stolen by corporate giants.”

(by flying to studios in bigger cities), no less than five finalists are writing and recording during their spare time on this summer's trek (see "American Idols Live Tour Dates Announced").

Along with Carrie Underwood and Bo Bice, Constantine Maroulis (see " 'Idol' Finalist Constantine Maroulis Got A Lot Done At All Those Parties"), Anwar Robinson and Nikko Smith hope to be nearly finished with their albums by the time the tour ends in September.

"I've been working on a project for a while, but this 'American Idol' experience gave me a reason to [get it done]," Robinson said backstage at recent tour stop.

Robinson's genre of choice is gospel music, but he's been exploring other styles with songs he's been writing since "American Idol" ended.

"It's based on a lot of elements of soul, R&B, jazz and gospel," he said. "I was calling it pop soul, but I'm wondering when the pop element is going to come in. I don't know yet, but I know it's definitely soulful."

A music teacher by day, Robinson can play several instruments and is experienced in recording studios, so he's also hoping to collaborate with other artists, including his fellow "Idols."

Bo Bice's Injury Won't Sideline this Powerful "Vehicle"

The Detroit A. I. Live! concert provided Bo Bice fans powerful proof this Rising Star is destined for greatness. I Bo-Lieve! (As they say in his hometown of Helena, Alabama.)

Bo Bice recently sustained injuries to include a broken foot and a sprained ankle while performing on tour. A jump attempted during an energetic performance, curtailed by surface grabbing athletic shoes contributed to the injuries. The dedicated performer, as he is exhibiting to be, continued on with that performance, not going to the hospital for treatment until afterwards. "The Show Must Go On..."

There were moments during Bice's performance in Detroit that were painful to watch. (I will warn you!) No, he was not missing lyrics; the painful part comes in watching him navigating that big stage, air-cast in tow, trying not letting it stop or slow him down. The effort of performing lwith the cast does impact his delivery of "Vehicle", but when he finally stops, stands and delivers the rest of the song, his voice commands the venue.

Fox needs to come clean about Abdul

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Fox has a big problem with "American Idol," where allegations of inappropriatecontact between judge Paula Abdul and a young contestant have damaged the credibility of primetime‘s top-rated show.

While ABC News‘ "Primetime Live: Fallen Idol" expose in Maydid not have much solid proof of all of contestant CoreyClark‘s allegations of a sexual relationship with Abdul, thephone records it produced showed that Abdul, one of only three"American Idol" judges, had frequent and extensive contact with Clark, a contestant on the program in 2003.

Whether other allegations also are proved -- such as Abdul‘s coaching the candidate, purchasing his clothes andcarrying on an intimate affair -- the damage has been done.Under no circumstances should there be even the appearance ofcollusion between judge and candidate, and the phone records,all by themselves, leave no doubt that this occurred.

An honorable and ethical response to the situation requiresa full, forth coming investigation by Fox. Meanwhile, Abdulshould have been removed from her position as judge pending theoutcome. The name or names of the investigators should be madepublic as well as the findings. Anything less smacks of acover-up and, at this point, the smacking is practicallydeafening.

Fox, perhaps hoping no one would remember, said at the time that it would look into the matter and then said nothing more.Maybe, just maybe, if the TV critics attending the Television Critics Assn. summer press tour didn‘t bring it up, the wholet hing could be swept under the rug. Alas for Fox and to thecredit of the critics, the subject came up throughout programing president Peter Liguori‘s news conference.

"We‘re addressing it as we speak," Liguori said during his executive Q&A session during Fox‘s portion of TCA last week,though there has been no announcement of any progress in the two months since the investigation began.

You can verify a phone bill statement in two days. You can talk to the guy who sold Abdul the suit she allegedly boughtfor Clark and all the other witnesses in two weeks. Heck, you can develop a TV series based on this scandal in less time than it is taking to investigate it. Being thorough is one thing;foot-dragging and playing for time is another.

Way back when Kelly Clarkson was best known as the "American Idol," she sang a few tunes she had written into a tape recorder and stashed it away. Fortunately, she remembered the tape when it came time to start her second album, as one of the tunes, "Because of You," will now be her next single.

They were just unbelievable, how structured [the songs] were and her understanding of music, which is not something you would expect from a pop artist," said former Evanescence guitarist Ben Moody, who co-wrote and produced the songs after Clarkson sent him the tape. "She had these ideas already in place for songs; all I really had to do was build music around them and develop them. It was quite easy."

Clarkson chose Moody, as well as his songwriting partner David Hodges, because of the sound of the band they once worked with (see "Ben Moody: No Regrets").

FOX, 'Idol' Launch Formal Probe Of Paula Abdul Sex Scandal

The tables have officially been turned on Paula Abdul, whose own fate on "American Idol" is now in the hands of a panel who'll pass judgment.

FOX and the producers behind the hit series have hired an independent counsel to investigate Corey

Clark's claims that Abdul had sex with and coached the singer while he was a contestant during the 2003 season.
Addressing the Television Critics Association on Thursday (July 28), FOX Entertainment President Peter Liguori called the show's credibility "extraordinarily important to us" and said, "Any allegations against this show we take quite seriously," according to The Associated Press.

Liguori said the investigation's results are expected soon and will be made public. He did not address whether Abdul would be fired if the claims proved true. Clark has said he does not think she should lose her job, noting, "she didn't do nothing but have sex" (see "Corey Clark Meeting With 'Idol' Producers Over Paula Flap").

In the past, FOX has kicked off contestants who have lied about criminal activity, including Clark himself (see " 'Idol' Dismisses Corey Clark After Battery Charges Surface"). Abdul has denied Clark's allegations (see "Paula Abdul Denies Affair Allegation As 'Idol' Producers Investigate").

So far, however, FOX and the "Idol" producers have continued to support the judge, allowing her to finish the fourth season and then hiring her for "So You Think You Can Dance," which airs later this summer.

Abdul has been questioned, along with Clark and other corroborating witnesses. Liguori said the investigators, who are experienced "in this type of inquiry," are not being rushed by the network so as to clear up the situation in time for "Idol" auditions in August. "I'd rather be able to come to a ... definitive answer and conclusion," he said.

Around the same time Clark's debut album hit stores last month (see "Corey Clark Nabs Scott Storch, Peas Members For His 'Hot To Death' LP"), he was arrested for misdemeanor battery after a food fight in Sacramento hotel (see "Food Fight Puts Corey Clark In Another Messy Situation"). Charges were later dropped.

'Idol' Stars Award Songwriting Title

Mark Diffenderfer has written hundreds of poems since he was in grade school, but he never thought they'd win him any recognition.

But the 18-year-old entered the USA Weekend Songwriting Contest for Teens on a whim — and ended up beating out more than 12,000 other entries with "Make a Difference, Make Your Meaning."

Judges were past "American Idol" winner Fantasia Barrino and "American Idol" judge Simon Cowell.

"I was honestly blown away. I didn't know I wrote something that would do so well," said Diffenderfer. He said he wrote the song in one day and sent it in two hours before the deadline.

"It was more of a daydream to actually win. I always wondered what it would feel like, but I didn't think it would actually happen."

As part of his prize, the teen was flown to Los Angeles for the "American Idol" season finale, where he met Cowell.

"With all the things you hear about him, you'd think he would be vicious," Diffenderfer said. "But he was really a nice guy ... very positive and very supportive."

Diffenderfer will attend University of Michigan this fall. The contest win has him thinking about writing scripts for film, television or commercials.

William Hung Is Not Dead

A false news-story involving the death of American Idol celebrity William Hung is currently circulating. The story claims that Mr Hung "was found dead yesterday, apparently of an intentional heroin overdose". The story is being passed around via email and has generated a lot of discussion among those who frequent online message boards.

In fact, Mr Hung is alive and well. This rumor started from a story on the satirical "news" site, Broken Newz. Although it resembles a real news story, it is a complete fabrication apparently in the name of entertainment. Personally, I find this sort of satire in poor taste.

American Idol’s William Hung Found Dead of Heroin Overdose

Las Vegas, NV - Kitschy American Idol Star William Hung, famous for his botching of Ricky Martin’s “She Bangs,” was found dead yesterday, apparently of an intentional heroin overdose. The announcement of his death sent shockwaves to the tens of people who still found him funny.

Ironically, Mr. Hung was found by a VH1 camera crew sent to begin filing “William Hung: Behind the ‘Music.’” Viacom immediately decided to rename the special: “William Hung: fifteen minutes till death.”

Friends of Mr. Hung say he had become despondent in recent days. “I don’t know, it’s just so sad,” said Ming Tse, one of Hung’s former classmates at Stanford, “I heard him the other day on Snotbubble’s Morning Madhouse; he kept trying to make William say things like ‘me so horny’ and ‘hey sailor’ while playing the sound of a bomb falling. I just know William was hurting inside when Snotbubble got him to say, ‘you wanna some-e egg foo young-e.’ It was so sad. I just think he was tired of the commercialization of it all.”

Other friends, who had lost contact with him in recent weeks, feared he was becoming too “Hollywood.” “I’m not surprised he was on heroin,” said Hung’s engineering cohort Melvin Samples, “I mean just two months ago we were out at our usual corner table at Smitty’s, and William actually went and talked to some girls. The next thing I know he’s doing shots with some hipster guys; they were calling him ‘Long Duck Dong’ and making him say ‘au-to-mo-bile.’ From what I hear, it’s not a long leap from that to heroin addiction.”

Stanford’s hippy population immediately misconstrued the situation and adopted Hung’s death as a pet cause. “He was a victim of the corporate greed-machine, just like Kurt [Cobain] and Eddie [Vedder, who is actually still alive],” said one dreadlocked mourner outside the engineering department at Stanford University, where a makeshift memorial had been set up, “he just wanted to sing, and Fox decided to turn him into this joke, man, this fucking joke. They just ate him up and spit him out. Fucking Bill O’Reily. Fox TV has an outside investigator looking into charges levied by a former "American Idol" contestant against judge Paula Abdul.

Abdul will remain on the show until the investigator comes to a conclusion about Corey Clark's claims that he and Abdul carried on an affair -- and that she helped him during "Idol's" second season -- Fox Entertainment President Peter Ligouri told the Television Critics Association press tour in Los Angeles.

"The credibility of the competition is extraordinarily important to us," Ligouri said Thursday. "And we want to make sure that there's a thorough inquiry."

Former 'Idol' finalist Clay Aiken to appear on ABC's 'All My Children'

Clay Aiken, currently on a 25-city U.S. tour, will appear on the ABC's "All My Children" playing himself being interviewed by Erica Kane.

Kane, played by Susan Lucci, will have the singer on her new talk show. The show will air Sept. 14.

Aiken, who sang three songs from his Jukebox Summer Tour 2005 on ABC's "Good Morning America" said he has decided to leave Los Angeles and return to his hometown of Raleigh, N.C.

"I like L.A., I like California, but there's a different energy there," he said.

In addition four singing tours and selling nearly 4 million albums in two years, Aiken was named a UNICEF ambassador.

"It's the closest thing I can do now to being in a classroom and teaching," said Aiken, who earned a degree in special education at University of North Carolina-Charlotte. He told "Good Morning America" he recently visited Uganda, where he visited "night commuters" -- children who must leave their homes in the countryside every night to sleep in UNICEF shelters to avoid being abducted by a rebel group.

Last March, Aiken visited camps for tsunami survivors in Indonesia.

American Idol Somehow Getting Even Bigger

American Idol, it seems, is a force that will not be stopped.
Beginning in August 2006, the reality phenomenon will turn its tryouts into an Idol Auditions Tour. According to a press release, the tour will stop in 50 cities and will allow an additional 20,000 people to attempt to win over the judges.
In other seasons, the show held auditions in less than 10 cities and some hopefuls, like recent winner Carrie Underwood, had to travel for hours to reach a tryout destination. Spokesperson Ken Seiff said the idea for the tour was born upon learning that one contestant had to sell her wedding ring in order to make the trip. "We realized that there were probably other contestants who couldn't afford to travel or take time off from work in order to try out for the show," Seiff said.
The first 500 people to arrive at each audition site and meet the show's requirements will perform for the judges. The best of the 500 will then sing in front of a live audience in their city to gain access to one of the show's main audition sites.
Dates and cities for the Audition Tour haven't been announced yet but officials say it will take place in time for the show's sixth season.
Jasime Trias, a native of Hawaii and third-place finisher in Idol's third season, said the tour will open doors for people who, like her, wouldn't have been able to travel for an audition. "American Idol changed my life and I'd hate to think that there's some performer out there who won't be given the chance to shine because they can't make it to an audition," she said. "This is a great opportunity."
Auditions for American Idol's fifth season will be held later this summer in Austin, Chicago, Denver, Boston, Memphis and San Diego.
